Times for Thruxton Race Retro, Sun 5th July 2026

Straightliners were invited to put on a drag race event at Thruxton 80’s revival car race weekend and what a brilliant friendly meeting it was.

Over the weekend there were 74 competitors all agreeing that the opportunity to race at this iconic race circuit brought another much needed venue for drag racing.
An 1/8th mile track was laid out on a central runway inside the race circuit. There were favourable comments by all on how good the No Prep race surface was and that hopefully this will be the start of another drag race venue in the south.
Though run as a RWYB event on this first visit the Outlaw Outcasts Club ran a dial in competition, each competitor submitting their three runs closest to their dial in to finish up with a winner at the end of the weekend no eliminations necessary. The format working very well with some impressive performances none more so than Dave Coombes within 100ths of his dial in on many runs even posting a perfect run smack on his dial in, Dave taking the winners trophy.
Fastest on Saturday in cars was Luchian Preda with a hugely modified Mitsubishi Evo who managed a 6.45sec at 117mph among some indifferent runs. Daniel Wilson in a V8 Slingshot Dragster went 6.54sec at 113mph for 2nd and Andy Harriss on 6.93sec at 111mph in a McLaren 720S. Fastest bike went to Steve Mayes who was just shy of a 6 second run with a 7.01sec at 114mph on his Suzuki. Even Alex and Thomas Thistlethwayte, the circuit owners, came along for a couple of runs, told you it was friendly!!!
Sunday saw a few new faces among them some of the scooter lads. Peter Slater, a Straightliners regular, was quick straight out of the trailer on his Turbo Hayabusa running fastest time of the day with a 6.33sec at  125mph so taking the bike win. Fastest car was once again Luchian Preda whose best time was identical to his Saturday time with another 6.45sec this time at 123mph. Graham Scriven who kindly took a member of the Thruxton film crew for a memorable passenger ride on Saturday fitted different rear tyres for Sunday and got down into the 6’s with a 6.92sec at 105mph in his old school supercharged Anglia for 2nd. In 3rd was Philip Moules running well in his lovely Willys Coupe again supercharged V8, a best of 6.97sec at 108mph with Kane Bodiam, Mustang,  just 100th behind with a 6.98sec at 110mph.
With a great mix of iconic race cars in the circuit paddock and live bands and fair on site an evening walkabout was a must and the event bringing drag racing to spectators young and old to a new audience.
Here’s hoping for more Drag racing events at Thruxton, the crew are certainly up for it.
