KILO WHEELIES AND TOP SPEED
20 years ago Dave ‘Dodge’ Rogers came up with the idea of a 1 kilometre wheelie competition and it was nice to see him at last take the spoils of being the fastest, and not only that but crack the magical 200mph barrier at 203.976mph to join the exclusive club.
It wasn’t to be a double win for our regular from the USA, Bubba Myers whose 197.291mph was shy of the hoped for 220mph to crack Ted Brady’s 217mph though it was a great effort on the Holeshot bike. Third was Baz Brittain in the turbo class at 152.425mph.
Fastest of the non-turbo runners, and enough for 3rd overall, was Jed Stephenson on the V4 Aprilia at 154.941mph, ahead of Irishman and regular, Enda Wright on 149.640mph just ahead of Frenchman Phillipe Richard on 149.071mph.
TOP SPEED
An impressive 102 records were established or broken during Speed Week, comprising of 34 World Two Run Average Records, 60 UKITA Two Run Average Records and 8 UKITA One Way Records.
Fastest, just, was Phil Wood on Big CC’s turbo Busa with a best run at 272.386mph, incidentally just shy of his 273mph best ever, and a 272.169mph 2 run average.
Try as he might Jack Frost, Holeshot turbo Busa, suffered numerous niggling problems ending with a best 270.374mph, though running in a different class to Phil.
Phillipe Le Peru had a best of 257.301mph, though had returned to France prior to Sunday’s higher speeds.
Guy Martin made an appearance on Thursday and still running completely unfaired ran a highly impressive 259.542mph.
Probably the bravest man was Paul Milbourn who upped his personal best speeds on his own bike before jumping on the back of Jack Frost for a crack at the two up record which stood at 199mph. With a best of 234.715mph they certainly moved the goalpost for that record.
Adie Horrocks was highly impressive on his pair of Vespa’s the 244cc version running 127.514mph and 2 run average of 126.376mph, his last run coming to an expansion chamber scraping halt with a shock absorber problem.
Gilles Pujol and his band of Bonneville stalwarts from France once again brought along an eclectic mix of machinery carefully chosen to set records in the cheaper end of the record breaking scene.
Gregory Crosnier setting records on his 650 Yamaha sprinter and then on a rapid 50cc Peugeot moped.
Roland Martiny showed up for a 2nd year with his 250cc Rotax powered sidecar upping his previous records and Mark Suel setting records in the 100cc class.
Gilles himself established electric records with a Velo Solex moped and also on the Saline Devine two wheel drive bike in solo and sidecar configuration.
Andy Bush has at last sorted the carburation problems that have thwarted his attempts over the last few years on the 125cc TM Maverick but with a best of 126.9mph was shy of his 130mph target which is the current record in class established many years ago and just to rub salt in the wound son Sam went fractionally faster!!
Juniors once again ran on the 500mtr distance with Jack Taylor and William Mountford on their Junior Elite class bikes. William running in the up to 350cc class had a best of 109.522mph and Jack in the up to 250cc class 100.389mph
Alfie Barraclough set records in the up to 125cc class with a best of 73.451mph. It was Maisie Thornton’s first time running top speed and in the same class as Alfie she had a 67.856mph best.
